For the third issue, Understanding SharePoint Journal continues to focus on development scenarios and returns to the solution detail format that was used in issue 1. The solution in issue 3 is a content tagging solution that uses SharePoint custom field types as well as webparts.
Custom field types is one of the most feared development scenarios for SharePoint developers. In the third issue, you will learn how to create these custom field types as well as what problems arise when trying to develop these features. You will also learn why custom field type properties work the way they do as well as workaround for what has become known as the custom field type property bug. As you will see, this is not really a bug, but rather a curious design.
In addition to custom field types, you will learn how to use WSPBuilder to create custom web parts for SharePoint, as well as how to create a custom application page for displaying filtered views of lists.
