Issue 6 of Understanding SharePoint Journal is now available.

Understanding SharePoint Journal presents two new solutions, SPThemes and SPSampleData, designed to teach you new aspects of SharePoint development.

SPThemes seeks to overcome some of the weaknesses of the default SharePoint themes solution. Utilizing supportable techniques, SPThemes allows for custom themes, site collection scoped themes, and personal themes for users.

SPSampleData provides an easy method to extract data from lists in SharePoint into ListInstance elements, ready for deployment as part of a feature. SPSampleData creates the CAML code you need, based on either raw list data or any view.

In this issue, spanning 90 pages, you will learn the following aspects of SharePoint development:

DelegateControl development

CustomAction

User Information List Management

Custom Property Storage using Extension Methods

Programmatic List Creation

Custom application page development

Also, you can get a 20-page preview on the Issue 6 web page.

For the third issue, Understanding SharePoint Journal continues to focus on development scenarios and returns to the solution detail format that was used in issue 1. The solution in issue 3 is a content tagging solution that uses SharePoint custom field types as well as webparts.

Custom field types is one of the most feared development scenarios for SharePoint developers. In the third issue, you will learn how to create these custom field types as well as what problems arise when trying to develop these features. You will also learn why custom field type properties work the way they do as well as workaround for what has become known as the custom field type property bug. As you will see, this is not really a bug, but rather a curious design.

In addition to custom field types, you will learn how to use WSPBuilder to create custom web parts for SharePoint, as well as how to create a custom application page for displaying filtered views of lists.

More information about the issue will be posted as it becomes available, but if you want to inside scoop as soon as possible, join the mailing list by filling out the form below:

USP Journal Volume 1 – Issue 1 deals with the following aspects of the solution:

DelegateControl

CustomAction, both CAML based and Assembly based

Custom application pages in SharePoint, using code-behind files

List deployment and column manipulation

Solution setup using SharePoint event receviers

In addition, several sub-topics are explained, such as list querying in SharePoint using CAML, using WSPBuilder to speed up development time, and extending the User Information List to hold custom data.

There is also a free preview download available. Visit the USP Journal Issue 1 page to read more.
