What is a SharePoint site

A SharePoint site refers to a collection of lists, libraries, pages, and other functionality.

Site is a technical term that has changed meaning from version 2 to version 3 of the SharePoint platform. In version 2, meaning WSS2 and SharePoint Portal Server 2003, the term refered to a collection of webs, with a web being a collection of lists, libraries, and pages as described above.

The main difference is that in a normal list the metadata is what defines an item in the list while in a library the document is the main focus. Libraries do support metadata, however.
