Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services, or WSS, is the free version of SharePoint that ships with and is supported on Windows Server 2003.
WSS is the name used for the free version of SharePoint from version 2, which was released in 2003. To distinguish between version 2 and version 3 the version number is often included in the name, ie WSS2 or WSS3.
