What is SharePoint

SharePoint is a collaboration solution from Microsoft. There are two distinct versions of SharePoint, one free version, referred to as SharePoint Services, and a paid product, referred to as SharePoint Server.

Prior to 2003 the free version of SharePoint was called SharePoint Team Services. After 2003 the free version of SharePoint changed name to Windows SharePoint Services. The paid version of SharePoint was called SharePoint Portal Server until 2007 when it was renamed to Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.

SharePoint is used for a wide variety of collaborative tasks, such as document and information sharing, calendars, contact lists, and tasks. The out-of-the-box functionality supports the most common features needed for a basic company or department intranet.

In addition, SharePoint is open for third-party add-ons and plugins and there exists a wide variety of such expansions. Developers can easily create new features or expand existing features to tailor ond customize SharePoint.
