Using tools for development, such as WSPBuilder, STSDEV, or VSeWSS, is a great way to speed up development, but not a great way to learn SharePoint development.
Start developing without these tools to learn how to create features, solutions, webparts, and event handlers, before you turn to tools to automate the process for you. This way you learn how to fix problems that may arise and you also learn how to tweak the automated code to do your bidding.
For example, you can teach one of your solutions to play dead, or roll over. I am really good at that.
