Thanks for the comments, Daniel, I'm sorry to break your heart :-)

I'm not sure I completely understand your problem here, but you can use the techniques from Chapter 5 (page 96) to override the default rendering control templates.

However, this is really not a best-practice approach. A much better approach is to do this on a content type level, and define either a rendering template (FormTemplates) or a page for rendering (FormUrls) in the content type definition.

If I'm not getting you right, please email me and I can try to help further.

Wow! The book was great and informative. However comma (yes I spelled out comma!) Page 264 was my heartbreaker page. I was so looking forward to finally learning how to use rendering templates to replace the default edit document library templates. I have a requirement to provide cascading dropdowns on the form. I instead took the user control on a webpart approach and the form renders great. Now I have to find the right code to insert the metadata properties into the library. I did find the book to be a wealth of knowledge and the comedic approach was quite a refresher. I hope to see more books like this! (Hint Hint Wink Wink)

So far a great read. Unfortunately having a few issues with exercises. Is there a way I can ask a few questions on this website?

Great news. Just a small tip for people who upset by luck of installation procedure in chapter 1. Look into chapter 2 of Microsoft SharePoint: Building Office 2007 Solutions in C# 2005 by Scot P. Hillier book. It has detailed description on how to build development environment in MS Virtual Server 2005. It can be easily moved to MS Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V.
